ASPEN The Aspen Education Foundation, a local nonprofit that raises money to help the school district with programs and purchases that won't fit into the regular budget, recently awarded $427,000 in educational grants within the Aspen School District.
The 2007-08 District Priority Grants are based on the recommendations of Superintendent Dr. Diana Sirko and the principals of Aspen High School, the middle school, elementary school and the Aspen Community School.
The grant awards include a new freshman seminar program in the high school, the college coordinator position, a SAT/ACT preparation class, English Language Learners teacher positions, coordinated professional development programs, and a K-8 literacy program amongst many more.

On Monday, Sen. Schwartz met with members of the Aspen School Board, and took part in a fundraising event Tuesday for the Aspen Education Foundation.
Sen. Schwartz said Colorado Assembly is taking strides to make sure school buildings around the state are in compliance with certain safety standards, and that all districts get the funding they need to do the job of educating the states children.
Some of the Legislatures efforts might not be designed specifically to provide help to Aspen schools, but both Schwartz and a local educator said that any attempt to raise the quality of education throughout the state will benefit the Aspen district.

The event, organized chiefly by Kathy Klug at Aspen High School, is the only opportunity most high school students on the Western Slope will have to see and to be seen by college admissions representatives as the students prepare for their college careers.
Klug, who has been the AHS college counselor for the past two years, said she expects about 160 colleges and universities to send representatives to Aspen this week, up from 130 last year.
Klug said her salary is paid by a combination of grants from the Aspen Education Foundation (50 percent), the Aspen Community Foundation (30 percent) and the school district (20 percent).
